Cumberland Posey was an incredible athlete who later became the architect of the Homestead Grays dynasty that won nine consecutive pennants (1937-1945) and had the two premier home run hitters in Negro League history (Buck Leonard and Josh Gibson) in the middle of his lineup. Posey (d.1946) signed and composed this handwritten letter (dated 1942) during that incredible run. The handwriting and signature both average ("9-10") in pencil and are placed upon a sheet that presents in (EX-MT) condition with normal folds and few scattered staple marks on the top of the page. The letter is composed on "Tenth Annual Negro American and National League East-West All-Star Games Chicago Hotel" letterhead includes details of a possible matchup that pitted the Grays and Gibson against the Monarchs and Satchel Paige. Full letter reads:
Dear Sir:
If you have no other plans for Sunday, August 30th would it be possible for Homestead Grays with Josh Gibson catching to play Kansas City Monarchs with Satchel Paige pitching. Our club has played Kansas City twice this year. We draw 26,000 on a week day in Wash DC and 11,000 in Pgh on a week day. The Grays defeated Kansas City in extra innings both times.
We will donate the Detroit Baseball Federation ten per cent after Park and Park Help is paid.
I have many requests at hand for this game.
Yours,
C.W. Posey
